ACHEH ACHEH AGREEMENT NOW IN SIGHTThe Free Acheh Movement (GAM) is pleased to announce that, in negotiation with the Government of Indonesia (GoI), it has reached an in-principle agreement on the question of the establishment of local political parties in Acheh. The proposed agreement on the conditions and timing of the establishment of local political parties in Acheh is now being considered by the Government of Indonesia in Jakarta. If this proposal is accepted in Jakarta, it will pave the way for finalising an agreement on achieving a sustainable peace in Acheh. GAM spokesman Mr Bakhtiar Abdullah said the details of the in-principle agreement remained confidential at this stage, but that it reflected the genuine commitment of both GAM and GoI to seeking a mutually acceptable and workable solution to the question of establishing local political parties. ‘We now trust that Jakarta will accept the proposal reached between GAM and GoI,’ Mr Bakhtiar Abdullah said. ‘Assuming there is agreement in Jakarta, we now look forward to concluding negotiations on the peace agreement.’ ‘We hope now to be able to sign this agreement, and with the help of EU monitors and the international community, look forward to bringing a sustainable peace to Acheh.’ Signed, Mr
