ACHEH/SUMATRA NATIONAL
LIBERATION FRONT
SPEECH BY MR. MALIK MAHMUD
At the meeting with President Martti Ahtisaari, RI Vice President Jusuf Kalla, and GAM Leadership at the Köningstedt, Helsinki 21 January 2006
Excellency President Martii Ahtisaari, Excellency Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Excellencies, friends, ladies and gentlemen. First of all, I would like to extend warm greetings from the supreme leadership of GAM, His Highness Teungku Hasan M. di Tiro to all of you present in this historic building. Unfortunately, His Highness was unable to attend this meeting with us. On behalf of the people of Acheh, Highness Teungku Hasan M. di Tiro and all members of GAM in Acheh as well as who still living abroad, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation and thanks to President Martii Ahtisaari, staff of Crisis Management Initiative and the Government of Finland who have worked hard and given their full support to enable us achieve a comprehensive sustainable peace resolution with dignity to all parties since last winter 2005. Thanks to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia which up to this moment has show its commitment to the provision of the Helsinkis MoU. For this, we especially appreciate the wise and foresight leadership of the new government under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Our special thanks to Dr. Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union and to Mr. Pieter Cornelis Feith, the Head of Acheh Monitoring Mission and his teams from member states of European Union, ASEAN, Norway, and Switzerland who have successfully implemented the first phase of the provision of the Helsinkis MoU. Not forgetting, special thanks to the UN Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, the Government of the United States of America, Japan, Switzerland, Norway, and many others which for years were encouraging to seek practical ways to solve Acheh conflict in a peaceful manner. Last but not least, my deepest appreciation to all Achehnese living in Acheh and abroad who have given their undivided loyalty and stood firm in the effort to achieve peace in Acheh. As required in the Helsinkis MoU, GAM has dissolved its military wing, the TNA. Subsequently, GAM and all Achehnese society have redirected their struggle for a political system in which the aspiration of, security and the freedom for Achehnese through a fair mechanism will be achieved with dignity for all. Nevertheless, this 5-month old peace process must be so safeguarded and monitored that there is no room for any elements to spoil the process of this peace building. The Government of Indonesia has shown its commitment on this matter and we hope the government will also be committed to creating political condition and law which allow the introduction of new Law on Governing of Acheh (LoGA) as stipulated in the MoU. I appreciate the AMM team who is now monitoring the process of creating LoGA. We hope the AMM will also monitor its implementation, as well as to monitor the other MoUs points. The peace process in Acheh would have never come to reality without the full support and assistances from all parties, especially the CMI and the AMM. Thank you very much.
