CONCERN
ON ACHEH'S MILITIAS
The Free Acheh Movement (GAM) expresses its deep concern over the
continuing presence of TNI proxy militias in Acheh despite tomorrow's
signing of the Acheh peace agreement (15 August).
According to the agreement, the Government of Indonesia (GoI) will be
responsible for the decommissioning of illegal weapons held by illegal
groups or parties. This means the Indonesian police (Polri) will be
responsible for the disarmament of militias. |

that, in negotiation with the Government of Indonesia (GoI), it has
reached an in-principle agreement on the question of the establishment of
local political parties in Acheh.
The proposed agreement on the conditions and timing of the establishment
of local political parties in Acheh is now being considered by the
Government of Indonesia in Jakarta. If this proposal is accepted in
Jakarta, it will pave the way for finalising an agreement on achieving a
sustainable peace in Acheh. |

CLARITY NEEDED TO
REACH PEACE AGREEMENT
The Free Acheh Movement (GAM) says the Acheh peace talks held under the
auspices of the Crisis Management Initiative of President Ahtisaari has
made further progress towards reaching an agreement to end Acheh’s
long-running conflict.
The 5th round of the peace talks being held at Konigstedt, Vantaa, outside
Helsinki, is intended to finalise drafting a peace agreement by tomorrow,
Saturday 16 July 2005. According to GAM, an agreement in principle may now
be possible. However, issues remained to be resolved to reach such an
agreement. |

Pemerintah Negara Acheh mengutuk, tetapi
tidak terkejut oleh hukuman-hukuman berat, dari 12 hingga 15 tahun
penjara, yang telah dijatuhkan ke atas lima anggota perunding damai Acheh
oleh pengadilan Indonesia di Banda Acheh.

The Government of the State of
Acheh condemns but is not surprised at the lengthy prison sentences of
between 12 to 15 years handed down to our five peace negotiators by a
court in Banda Acheh. Several others have received harsh sentencing,
including a female humanitarian worker who is acused of heading the Inong
Bale, the women's wing of GAM. This accusation is a falsehood.
